The Q&A Archives: In Search of Disease Free Cucumbers

Question: Where can I find seeds for cucumbers that are totally desease free.? Seems I get a good start, but soon the cuke beetles and the virus destroy my dreams. I know your catalog lists "desease free" cukes, I've tried them, no success. Help! John Christopher North Haven, CT

Answer: No cucumber is totally disease free. If you have cucumber beetles, then chances are you have bacterial wilt disease attacking your fruits. There is only one cucumber variety that I know that is resistant to bacterial wilt (County Fair 87). The bestcontrol is to stop the cucumber beetles by spraying them with sabadilla dust early in the season. Any of the hybrid cucumbers listed in the Burpee catalog should grow fine then.
