The Q&A Archives: Encouraging Strawberries to Flower

Question: We just moved in to a rental house that has an above ground strawberry flat. The flat is about 3' off the ground and has a wire bottom. The soil was very hard

Answer: Unless you know how old the plants are you may want to think about renewing them after the growing season. Strawberries should be replanted every two years. To encourage flowering for your existing plants top dress them with a 1" layer of compost, side dress them with ammonium nitrate, 5-10-10 fertilizer or manure tea and keep the well watered.
