I was wondering about the brown patches in the lawn where the dog has peed. Can I just dig up the sod and put in new sod or do I have to dig up the soil as well?

The main reason dog urine damages the sod is due to the salts it contains. Therefore, drenching the spot with water should take care of any lingering problems, allowing you to replant grass without having to replace the soil.
