| There are several common reasons for scrawny roses: poor soil preparation prior to planting is probably the most common. The next most common is lack of sunlight. Most roses really need full sun all day but will tolerate six hours and subsist on less. After that, the choice of variety can make a big difference. Some of them are just not all that vigorous. Finally, pruning and feeding and regular watering are all important for best performance.
