Purple heart (Setcreasea purpurea or more recently Setcreasea pallida) is sometimes called Purple Jew. It is a perennial, and in fact may not even freeze to the ground in the Deep South during a mild winter.

In your area it should be a dependable perennial that can be planted almost any time of the year. Now would be an excellent time as that would give it a full season to grow and fill in nicely.
