Onions like a rich soil well supplied with organic matter, even moisture and good drainage. Very often small onions are the result of growing a variety unsuited to your lattitude. You should look for onions described as "widely adapted" or "good for the North". Your County Extension (725-6441) should be able to suggest varieties particularly well suited to your local conditions, but you might consider something like "Walla Walla Sweet" and see if it makes a difference.
