The Q&A Archives: Gardening over septic areas

Question: Is it safe to plant a vegetable garden over a septic field? (The house was newly built 1 year ago on a site that had never been built on before). The area with the septic field is the only sunny, treeless area on the property. Would building raised beds on it make it safer? Margaret Candler, NC

Answer: You can garden over your septic area with these few limitiations. 1) No edible plants such as herbs, vegetables and fruits 2) No large trees or shrubs 3) No aggressively rooted plants such as willows Try shallow rooted flowers in raised beds arethe best bet.
