The Q&A Archives: Sweet Lavender

Question: I need to know the growth rate of Sweet Lavender and if it multiples and if so, then how fast? How often and when should it be fertilized?

Answer: There are many cultivars of lavender, but the sweetest smelling is English Lavender. It's a branching sub-shrub, growing to about 3' tall, with 6"-8" flower spikes. Lavender grows quickly to its maximum height and established plants can be divided in the spring, taking roots with stems attached and replanting to increase your stock of plants. Lavender doesn't need a great deal of care, but you can feed in early spring with a 5-10-10 fertilizer. Plant your Lavender in a sunny spot with average garden soil.
