The Q&A Archives: Alternatives to railroad ties

Question: What can I use besides railroad ties or treated lumber for my raised beds. I am worried about poisins leaching into the soil. G. Miller Oak Ridge, TN

Answer: You are wise to avoid treated wood. You can build with a relatively durable (but expensive) wood like hemlock or cedar; you can build with untreated pine, knowing that you will have to replace this every few years; you can use field stone; or you might try the new lumber made from recycled plastic.
