The Q&A Archives: Transplanting Tomato Seedlings

Question: When is the best time to transplant tomato seedlings at the 2 leaf stage into larger pots? Mine are in 2 inch square peat pots now and have just germinated. Do I need to add fish emulsion or some sort of fertilizer to the seed starting mix? I am a beginner gardener and have a greenhouse which I would like to grow these tomatoes in. I'm from the Canadian midwest in a city called Saskatoon with a short growing season.

Answer: Fish emulsion would be fine for feeding young tomato plants. Use it at 1/4 the recommended strength and feed twice a week. When the tomatoes are transplanted to the garden, use a fertilizer with less nitrogen and more phosphorus and potassium.
