The Q&A Archives: Black Oil Sunflower Seed

Question: My wife and I want to start a small garden. We want to grow Sunflowers to feed the wild birds. They like Black Oil Sunflower Seed the best. Which sunflower plant will produce the Black Oil Seed?

Answer: Black Oil Sunflower seeds are generally grown as a commercial crop and seed would be obtained from a farm seed dealer or supplier. In my experience, the birds are more than happy to eat absolutely any kind of sunflower seed -- even before you can harvest it! Since you have a small garden you might enjoy some of the newer multi-branched types, although the traditional large headed sunflowers types are very attractive as well as more productive.
