The Q&A Archives: Growing Bamboo

Question: For year I was cutting down what I thought was a tenacious giant weed in my garden. I finally let it grow last year and it turned out to be bamboo! I love it now and it grew into a lovely minature tree in the corner of my garden. How should I take care of this plant? Do I cut it down to the roots each fall? I left it alone last year, but now it just seems to be a dead tree!!!

Answer: Where hardy, bamboo is generally a very tenacious plant and some of the more aggressive types can even be considered a weed if allowed to get out of bounds -- so be careful when you encourage it. The old canes can be removed in either fall or spring. Some gardeners use them as plant stakes and lashed fencing and so on.
