| I planted my kiwi's seven years ago and they have yet to produce fruit. They bloom and start to set fruit, but they dry up and fall off. The plants get plenty of water and sun and are of the hardy variety. They are supposed to be male and female plants. Can you shed some light for me? |
| Your seven-year-old kiwis are mature enough to bear fruit, especially if they are flowering. I suspect that you do not have both a male and a female, but two of the same. Kiwis can be identified by examining the flowers. Male kiwi flowers will be filled with thread-like stamens topped with yellow knobs of pollen. Female flowers will be mostly clear or white in the center with a row or two of yellow-topped threads around the center. Female flowers will have a small swelling where the stem connects to the sepals. This swelling is absent in the male flowers. Inspect the flowers of your plants so you can determine their true identities. You may end up planting a male kiwi in place of one of your females. |
