| I usually start all my garden from seed, mostly Burpee but past couple of years have had difficulty in getting Blue Lake Bush Beans to germinate. Usually the beans rots in the 6 pack. I have tried cutting down on water, changing depth but to no avail. I think I got 4 plants this year out of 48 seeds. I presoak seeds. Would it help to score the seed? |
| General germinating requirements for beans include warm soil (60F is ideal), proper depth, and proper moisture. Don't presoak or pre-sprout bean seeds prior to planting, but sow them directly in the garden when the soil warms in the spring. The germination rate for beans is about 70 percent, and bush bean seeds should sprout in 14 days. Try starting your seeds again, sowing about 1 1/2 inches deep in moistened, amended garden soil, and maintaining an even soil moisture throughout germination and growth of your plants. You should have better success now that you know the secrets of the trade. |
