| We have some large pots (24"X36") that we would like to grow some plants in for our front yard. In the past we seem to have a problem keeping the pots watered. Someone forgets etc. Are there some kinds of plants that would be more forgiving if we forget. I would like something tall (we have killed a number of evergreens) and something to fill in around the bottom. The area faces south and would have sun all day. It gets quite warm with the house protecting it. I am also concerned about how these plants would over winter as we do get some short periods of very cold weather and the pots are exposed on all sides. I would like a green tall plant if possible and something/s that bloom. Thank You, K Chalmers |
| Dwarf varieties of red cedar (Juniperus species) are very drought tolerant, but any plant needs moisture to survive, as you've learned. A product like Terra Sorb, which Burpee carries, when mixed with soil, helps hold moisture where plants need it. Good perennials to try are coreopsis, gazania, and painted daisies. For insulation against temperature extremes in winter, surround the planters with straw bales or tie styrofoam packing slabs around the planters, and disguise them with evergreen boughs or the like.
