I have bluebonnets in my front flower bed. They bloomed and are now dead. Would they return next year if I cut the seed pods off and lay them in the bed or do they have to do it themselves? Last year they died and the seed pods popped much earlier in the season. I am ready to put my summer flowers in the bed. I appreciate your help.

It's best to let seeds ripen on the plants, but there may well be a reserve of seeds left from the previous year that haven't germinated yet, and will do so next year. You could also try leaving a few of the dead plants in place, disguising them with the summer annuals you plant, and allow them to sow their own seed. Hope this helps!
