What trees would you suggest that are fast growing for screening and privacy? Our home is located in a southern California subdivision; i.e. a sea of houses. Our backyard is like living in a fishbowl. Your advice would be greatly appreciated by the whole family and our guests.

Sounds like you're looking for an evergreen hedge as a privacy screen. Consider Abelia grandiflora (Glossy Abelia), Callistemon citrinus (Bottle Brush), Choisya ternata (Mexican Orange), Escallonia exoniensis 'Fradesii', Viburnum, Photinia, or Pacific Wax Myrtle. Each of these plants provides seasonal flowers, and each will grow quickly in your gardening region.
