Question: Why do strawberries get very soft and discolored on the tips of the fruit?

Answer: There are several possible causes, yet the most likely is a type of fruit decay. While many fruit decay organisms develop a moldy or fuzzy growth, at least one type causes sunken, dull areas on the fruit. Moisture that stays in contact with the fruit after a rain or sprinkling can cause sunken areas on the berry also. Rainy weather increases the incidence of most berry diseases. If you wish to spray for berry rot fungi, your County Extension Office (phone 512-321-2184) can assist you with an appropriate, labeled product recommendation.

Another possibility is over maturity. The tip is usually the first area to get ripe and the first to turn soft as the berry gets overripe. You may be trying to grow a variety that is not the best adapted to your area.
