The Q&A Archives: Growing Chinese Bell Flowers (Abutilon)

Question: I'm interested in growing some Chinese Bell Flowers (Abutilon) and noticed the phrase Grow as Annual in the description. What does that mean? Sandi Cutright Williamsburg, OH

Answer: Abutilon is native to Brazil. There, it is a perennial shrub. It does not tolerate very much cold so has to be grown as an annual plant in climates whose annual average minimum temperature goes below freezing. This means it will die back in fall and have to be replanted in spring.
