The Q&A Archives: Tomato trees

Question: I would like to know if tomatoes can really be grown as a tree, indoors or outdoors, like the ad in the Sunday papers claim their tomatoes can. Charlyn Armstrong Bremerton, WA

Answer: The tree tomato advertised in the Sunday papers isn't really a tomato but a cousin of tomatoes that doesn't taste at all like a tomato. you can grow tomatoes like trees outdoors. Just prune off the side branches and grow an indeterminate variety. Somevarieties can grow very tall (10-20 feet), but alas when the winter comes they will still die from the cold. You can try to bring it indoors, but unless you have a indoor light setup, it won't grow well.
