I want to plant the type of lavender that grows woody branches and short compact flower heads. Would this be lavender munstead, true lavender, lavender hidcote, and if none of these, which variety should I look for? It'll be planted in a bed that is shaded by a big oak tree, but gets occasional sun.

Sounds like you'd enjoy growing Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas). It's a stocky plant, growing 1 1/2 to 3 feet tall, with dark purple flowers in dense, short spikes. Lavenders grow best in full sun. If given too much shade, the growth will be thin and flowers will be sparse. For best performance, give your lavender all day sunshine.
