The only good, safe option is to hire a professional tree removal company. They can climb the tree and bring it down from the top, a section at a time. Then the stump can be ground out do to below the soil surface. This can be expensive, but is the only safe option.

As you shop for a local company, look for one with some professional affiliation, such as a member of the International Society of Arborculture (ISA). This indicates an interest in being professional and remaining up-to-date on the latest industry standards and techniques.

Also request to see proof of the fact that they are bonded and insured. As an added precautionary measure, you may want to contact their insurance company to make sure the policy is current. This will protect you should an accident occur which might result in damage to your home or other property.
