Since pumpkins & watermelons take up so much space, someone suggested I let them grow in between by shrubs on the side of the house - which has a bed of cedar mulch on top (and I already put down Preen in there to keep the weeds down.) What do you think? I don't want to put them in the garden, or they will take over the vegetables. What do you think?

In general, it might work if they will recieve enough sun and will not suffer too much root competition from the shrubs. They will however, probably run all over the lawn and make mowing a pain. You will also need to check the labels of any chemicals you have used in that soil or area to be sure they are labeled for use in vegetable gardens and/or around those plants. Another option would be to grow the bush type melons and perhaps small melons and pumpkins on a trellis in the vegetable garden. There are some new smaller hybrids that take far less space than usual.
