The Q&A Archives: Blasting of Daffodils

Question: I have a late-blooming variety of double-white daffodil called "Obdam." The last couple of years they came up great, loaded with buds, and then just kind of sat there. They ended up blasting. Is there anything I can do to help them or should I give up and try another variety?

Answer: Don't give up, just try to improve the growing conditions for your narcissus. Bud blast is the drying up and failure of flower buds to open. Possible causes are root injury, cold soil, high temperatures during cloudy weather, and excessive shading. Dig and divide your bulbs and move them to another location if necessary to accommodate their needs.
