The Q&A Archives: Cross pollination of corn

Question: Will pop corn and sweet corn cross pollinate, if so how far apart should I plant them? I have a 8x16 ft garden now. When should I plant the popcorn seeds? Ruth Coburn Brazoria, TX

Answer: Yes, the sweet corn will effect the popcorn. The recommended separation for different varities of corn is 250' but you also have a second option( that should work) of staggering to planting times by two weeks. You can start the sweet corn after the ground has warmed up to 60-65 F. You can plant the popcorn later and leave it in the garden to mature and dry out Your growing season should give you plenty of time to grow both types of corn.
