I just bought my first house and I have a great back yard. I want to plant everything but also want to compost. I have three big bags of fresh grass clippings but no "browns." Can I use shredded office paper for compost? I'm concerned about ink from ink-jet printers.

Office paper is a good source of carbon for your compost pile. Many large offices now recycle their paper waste, using all types of printers. That ink shouldn't be a problem, so start shredding!

Some other browns include: straw, hay, dried leaves, shredded newspaper, and woody landscape trimmings (e.g., dead branches).
