Clematis 'Ville de Lyon' is a cultivar of the Viticella group. (A cross between Jackmanii and Viticella) It's fast growing and takes well to hard pruning. The flowers are bright carmine-red with deeper crimson on the edges and golden centers. Plant your clematis in light, rich, moist soil where the roots will remain cool and the tops will be in full sunshine. It prefers alkaline soils (6 - 7.5 pH) and excellent drainage. You can prune back each year to within 6" of the old vines and the plant will produce new flowering shoots the following spring. You can fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted liquid fertilizer to keep the leaf color bright and the vines growing vigorously.
