I'd like to use cut tulips in arrangements but how can I keep them from opening up so much? I've tried ice water, pennies in the vase, pinholes at the top of the stem...
What's the secret?

Tulips are wonderful flowers for arrangements, but they can be a bit of a challenge. If you cut too soon, the flowers won't open and if you cut too late, they will fall apart. For longest life in the vase, cut tulips when they are in the tight, but well-colored bud stage. Don't wait until they have been open for a few days or the petals will continue to open, eventually dropping.
