A crane(?)has eaten all of the goldfish in my water garden. The pool is 4' x' 8' x 2' deep. The crane, which is 31/2' tall and white, stands in the pool and eats all of the fish. How can I stop this?

I had a similar experience with a Blue Heron in my backyard water garden. I discouraged his visits by stringing nylon fishing line across the pond, criss-crossing it at 6" intervals. If you can drive stakes in the ground and make the line very tight, and just above the surface of the water, so much the better. I just wrapped the line around the large stones that surround my pond and crossed them randomly. The birds were wary of getting their legs caught and after a few tries gave up. I left the line in place from spring through autumn, then put it up the second year in the spring and took it down in the summer. I no longer put the line up and haven't had a problem since.
