We planted asparagus a few years ago and the patch is doing very well. I also planted some Mother of Thyme a few years ago and it has spread nicely among our patio blocks but it has also spread into our asparagus patch. Can I leave it there or should I rip it all up? I thought it might serve as "weed control" but I was also afraid it might smother the asparagus. Also, right now I use a pair of scissors to cut my asparagus. Is this okay? Or should I snap it off? Also, every now and again, I do forget to cut the asparagus. If it is beyond eating, should I just let it grow into a frond or should I cut it off? |
I'd pull the thyme out, because herbs can become quite invasive and you don't want anything competing for nutrients and water with your asparagus. When harvesting asparagus, if you use a knife, you may injure the crown, but snapping the spears off will keep the crowns safe from injury. Let those forgotten spears grow into fronds to help recharge the roots for next year's harvest. (A few of those fronds look great in floral bouquets as greenery!) |
