The Q&A Archives: Getting rid of whiteflies

Question: Last August my perennial and annual flower bed became infested with whiteflies. They killed some of my plants and when I spoke to someone at a local nursery they told me they would come back next year. What do I need to do this year to get rid of them? I think they originated on a Hibiscus plant that I no longer have. Eileen Loomis Lincoln University, PA

Answer: It's good you got rid of your hibiscus plant. White flies love them. This year as soon as you see them on your flowers, spray the plants with insecticidal soap twice a week until you don't see them anymore. The soap is safe to use on plants, won't harm animals or humans and kills white flies effectively.
