The Q&A Archives: Melons for Ghana

Question: I am trying to assist my brother in law who lives in the eastern region of Ghana, West Africa. He would like to farm a variety of melons including watermelon and cantelope. What seeds do you recommend I send him? Are there any special considerations for soil type? Marilynne Quarcoo Boston, MA

Answer: Not being familar with the climate and soils of Ghana, it's hard for me to say what melons we should grow. I think his best bet is to contact the Peace Corps in Ghana (if he's not already one). They should know the types of varieties to grow in thoseconditions. Any variety for the U.S. may do well, but it would be a risky and he should set up trial plots first before asking framers to grow them.
