The Q&A Archives: Peonies in Tucson

Question: A friend in Tucson wants me to send him some peony bulbs which he wants to try to grow in his newly developing, well-watered, and well-shaded flower garden. Do you have these bulbs available as well as information which may be useful (necessary?) for growing peonies in that climate? Don Gerlach Madison, WI

Answer: Your friend in Tucson is at the Southern edge of the range for growing peonies. If they really want to try, choose varieties adapted for the South such as 'Festiva Maxima' (ask local garden centers for other varieties to grow), plant in an area with afternoon shade, keep them well watered and mulched and hope for the best.
