I have a question regarding setting planter boxes directly on the lawn. I want to plant corn. Do I need to break up the grass first?

It's a good idea to break up the surface of the soil before putting planter boxes or raised beds over turfgrass. If you don't break it up to allow the old and new soils to intermingle, the old soil surface can stop water from draining properly. This is especially true if there will be a layer of dead grass and old grass roots.
