The Q&A Archives: Blackberry Cultivars

Question: Please give me the name of the huge blackberries one sees in the supermarket today.

Answer: Here's an educated guess, based upon your region (blackberries have a short shelf life and are difficult to ship), and the time of year the berries are available. If they're available early in the season, they are likely 'Cheyenne'. If they're available later in the season, they are probably 'Shawnee'. You might want to check with the store's produce manager, to make sure they are truly blackberries and not a boysenberry or loganberry.
