The Q&A Archives: Growing Yams

Question: My father, who lives near Ithaca NY, wants to know if he can grow yams. If so, what varieties would grow best there and what special treatment would they need?

Answer: Yams grow best in the southern states where the days are long, warm and humid. You can try to grow them, but choose a quick-maturing sweet potato that will mature in your area. Burpee offers the tried and true 'Georgia Jet' which takes just 90 days to mature (most sweet potatoes need 90-120 warm days to mature). They are tender plants, so be prepared to cover them if an unusual cold snap is predicted. Revisit the Burpee website to scan the on-line catalog.
