My father, who lives near Ithaca NY, wants to know if he can grow yams. If so, what varieties would grow best there and what special treatment would they need?

Yams grow best in the southern states where the days are long, warm and humid. You can try to grow them, but choose a quick-maturing sweet potato that will mature in your area. Burpee offers the tried and true 'Georgia Jet' which takes just 90 days to mature (most sweet potatoes need 90-120 warm days to mature). They are tender plants, so be prepared to cover them if an unusual cold snap is predicted. Revisit the Burpee website to scan the on-line catalog.
