We have always lived in an apartment (with silk plants.) We recently bought a house that has a "rock garden" in the front and a jungle in the back. Given my past history with killing indoor plants, can you suggest a guidebook on basic planting/ gardening? I am clueless, but I want to try and grown a lawn, flower bed, and maybe even a vegetable garden. I don't even know what "Perennials" means! Is there a "Gardening/Growing Plants for Dummies?" Please help!

Congratulations on your new home! There are several really good reference books for beginning gardeners including (you guessed it!)"Gardening for Dummies", "Annuals for Dummies", "Perennials for Dummies", " Houseplants for Dummies" and "Lawn Care for Dummies", all published by IDG Books. Another 'must have' for gardening in your region is "Sunset Western Garden Book", published by Sunset Books, ISBN# 0-376-03851-9. You'll never outgrow these books. They explain things in simple terms, but they are very comprehensive and you'll return to them again and again. Good luck with your new landscape!

P. S. A perennial is a plant that lives 3 or more years.
