The Q&A Archives: Hedges for shade

Question: I would like to know the best type of fast growing hedge to purchase for a mostly shady area along a fence. The hedge would have to be hardy to withstand summer heat. I would prefer a tall and bushy hedge. M.T.Dorris Pine Bluff, AR

Answer: It's tough to grow a heegde in the shade, but a few plants you might want to consider are arborvitae, yews, and privet. They would grow best with at least partial sun, but after talking with your local nurseryman, they may do okay in your situation. Ifyou have deep shade, then you might want to consider mountain laurel or rhododendrons.
