I have taken over an asparagus bed from a sister in law, and don't really know the best method to keep weeds down. I have been cliping the weeds with a hand trimmer because I don't want to dig down into the dirt for fear of pulling up the asparagus plants. So at this point I have the asparagus shoots coming up through the weeds. What do you recommend?

Unfortunately, when you clip the tops of the weeds off, the roots can still spread underground, taking up valuable water and nutrients from the asparagus. You will have to be careful not to yank up the asparagus, but it's best to pull the weeds out by the roots. Try soaking the bed thoroughly the day before weeding, which makes it easier to pull out the roots. Good luck!
