| Peanuts need full sunshine and soil that's loose and crumbly. You can plant peanuts in their shells or remove the outer shell but leave the pinkish skin intact. Sow seeds 1" deep and thin to space the seedlings about 10" apart. When the plants are about 1' tall, hill the earth around the base of each plant. Long, pointed pegs grow from faded flowers and will dip down toward the earth, burying themselves about 2" deep in the mounded soil. A peanut will form on the end of each peg. One inch of water each week is plenty for peanuts and if you amended the soil with organic matter, they should need no additional fertilizer. Peanuts are usually ready for harvest 120 days after planting. |
