The Q&A Archives: Too Late For Vegetables

Question: It's June 1 and I just got an urge to plant a vegetable garden, but I have nothing started (ground's not ready, nothing's been bought...). Should I wait till next year?

Answer: Since soil preparation is so important for a successful garden, and since so many of the heat loving crops need a long lead time to mature, your chances of success this summer are pretty limited. However, you can certainly begin to prepare the area and be ready start a fall garden this year -- planting would begin in August.
