Should I pluck off the dead blooms on my Rhododendron to ensure more blooms next year? My Mother insists that I should!

You should listen to your Mother! The buds for next year's leaf and blossoms are just beneath this year's spent blooms. Wait until the flower trusses are completely dry, then carefully snap them off, to allow the buds beneath to grow. Your effort will be rewarded with lovely large flowers next spring.
