| Pinto beans and the many other "dry beans" or "shell beans" can be grown similarly to other varieties, however they do take a long, warm season to mature. They can be planted when the soil temperature has reached at least 60 degrees. Normally it takes about 85 days before they can be harvested (the beans should be hard with a lowered water content and the vines should have begun to yellow) and air dried some more. It takes quite a lot of space to grow enough beans to do much with, but it is a fun project to try. (Burpee offers pinto beans in the center insert to the 1999 catalog.
