I ordered and planted shallots from the Burpee catalog in the manner suggested. Should I have divided the Shallots that Burpee sent before planting? It seems as if I plant 12 shallots, I'll grow 12 shallots. I think I'm missing something fundamental about planting. Can you explain my mystery? And why are they called "sets"?

"Sets" is a term that refers to what are basically tiny bulbs, often in the allium (onion) family. I believe that it came into use referring to plants ready to be "set out," or transplanted, not a phrase that we hear as often today. Each little bulb will multiply in the soil, so you'll end up with more shallots than 12! I hope this information helps!
