The Q&A Archives: Oregon grape holly and deer

Question: Is Oregon grape holly resistant to deer browsing? If it is not, what type of low growing shrub would you recomment to put along a fence line in western PA area? Jean Klaus Venetia, PA

Answer: Any plant will be eaten if deer are hungry enough. Oregon grape holly is no less susuceptible than others. Deer don't like succulent or fuzzy leaves so I'd recommend barberry and burning bushes for your hedge. They would do better than even roses of throny bushes.
