The Q&A Archives: Bitterness in cucumbers

Question: Last year the cucumbers that I harvested were all bitter. What could have been the cause of it? Mark Anderson Pl. Grove, UT

Answer: Bitterness in cucumbers is part genetic and part the weather. Choose non bitter hybrid varieties such as 'Sweet Slice' and 'Salad Bush' to start with. Then keep them growing well and watered consistently throughout the growing season. Mulch the bedswith hay or straw to conserve moisture and that should keep them tasting sweet.
