The Q&A Archives: Tulip Leaves Turning Brown

Question: This is the first year I have raised tulips and the leaves are turning brown on june 11. Are they done growing and can I trim the leaves off now, or have they developed some sort of problem? Will they return next year or should I plan on planting more bulbs?

Answer: Leave the bulb foliage on the plant, not cutting it back until it has yellowed and died naturally. The foliage will feed the bulbs for next year's flowers. Your tulips should return again next year. (Depending on conditions and tulip variety, some tulips are not long-lived.) Give them a feeding with fertilizer as they begin to emerge from the ground. Good luck!
