The Q&A Archives: Foliar fungi on strawberries

Question: My strawberry plants have black spots on the leaves, causing them to eventually turn brown and die. Is this some type of fungus, and how should I treat them? Bill Cance Chapel Hill, NC

Answer: There are a number of foliar fungi that attack strawberries. If you are only seeing a few spots on the leaves and the rest of the plant is healthy, I'd just pick off the infected leaves and destrot them, and keep the plants well watered and fertilized. If it seems to be spreading and killing leaves then you'd have to get the fungus positively identified by your local County Extension Agent (919-732-9361) before spraying. They should have recommended home garden sprays for strawberries.
