The Q&A Archives: Shucking walnuts

Question: How does one get the husks off of black walnuts after they have fallen from the tree? We thought the husks would split, then we could peel them. Instead they turned black and moldy. Marilyn Kenney Seattle, WA

Answer: To shuck walnuts you can use any of these less than scientific, but effective methods. Tap them with a hammer, stomp them with your boots on a hard surface, run them through a corn sheller, spread the nuts on a tarp on the paved driveway and run them over with a car. They all work. Then wash the nuts in a bucket of water and the unfilled ones will float to the top. It's no harder than that!
