The Q&A Archives: Can you grow orchids from cuttings?

Question: I received orchids for Valentines Day. Is there any way I can replant and grow the cuttings? Dr. Angel Carson, CA

Answer: There are many different types of orchids, and they are propogated in different ways -- generally by dividing root clumps, or planting bulbets or plantlets. It will proabably be difficult, if not impossible, to root your stems, but if you see any indication of rootlets forming along the stems, you can give it a try by placing stem cuttings in a tray of vermiculite or perlite and keeping moist.
